Dog Training
Therapetics Service Dogs go through three steps in the training process, puppy , advanced and team training with their new partners. We use highly dedicated volunteers for the first two stages of training.
Puppy Trainers
Puppy trainers are responsible for housetraining, socialization and teaching basic obedience such as sit, down, come and stay. As the puppies mature, puppy raisers begin taking them to public places for training in a "real world" environment. Training opportunities are not limited for these young dogs, however, we train our trainers to begin work on other service dog skills as the puppies demonstrate an aptitude for learning them.
Advanced Trainers
Once a puppy reaches one year of age, they transition to an advanced trainer home. Advanced trainers will take the service dog in training with them everywhere possible - to work, to church, restaurants, the movies, etc. They will fine tune the skills necessary for work as a service dog prior to partnering.
Once the dog's training is complete, the new partner is required to train with their new partner for approximately 120 hours of individualized instruction.
All of our trainers are special people who - with our guidance - are willing to give lots of love, attention, and time to these special dogs, and then be able to send them on to fulfill their destiny.
No experience training dogs is required to volunteer with Therapetics. We will teach you everything you need to know. If you are interested in more information, please contact us.
